On the cost of hiring research assistants in Europe, and the expenses involved in research on Malory: "You are going to have a damned interesting time, of that I'm sure, and I wish I were going to be in Florence with you. Don't forget that one of the world's great men is still alive, Bernard Berenson, and that he has the best and most usable historical library in Florence, which he is glad to make available to people with serious intentions. Don't hesitate to make yourself known to him, because he likes to meet other famous people."
